RESIGNING FROM YOUR CURRENT FIRM

Sometimes transferring between firms is just the change you need. Moving gives you the opportunity to give your career a jump-start, allowing you to remove yourself from an unpleasant work environment, increase your compensation package, attain greater personal and professional success, or provide a variety of other advantages that can add to your quality of life.

Here are a few tips that we have put together to help guide you through the resignation process:

BE PROFESSIONAL

Compose an official resignation letter. This document should be given as much care and attention as a résumé would receive—the more professional, the better.

MEET IN PERSON

Take time to meet with your superior(s) personally. Do not just drop off the letter, and do not resign over the phone or through e-mail. Give your superior(s) your resignation letter in a sealed envelope during the exchange.

KEEP IT SHORT

Maintain your professionalism throughout the meeting, and try to keep it short. Don’t make the situation any longer than it has to be.

AVOID COUNTEROFFERS

If the urge to accept a counteroffer hits you, keep cleaning out your desk as you count your blessings. Satisfaction will only be short-lived and you will once again be faced with the situation that caused you to seek an outside offer in the first place.

TRANSFERRING TO A NEW FIRM

A successful move requires a well thought-out transition plan. Making a move without a transition plan is a mistake that's not only painful and costly, but one that could cause major damage to your reputation and the relationships that you've worked so hard to build. Throughout the entire placement process, PWM will be there to offer you advice and guidance, putting our years of experience and industry knowledge to work for you.

Here are a few tips that we have put together to help guide you through the process of a successful transfer between firms:

START CALLING

Start calling on clients as soon as you arrive at your new firm, citing specific reasons for the location change. Assure your clients that you will be better able to serve them at the new firm, and ask that they make the move with you to receive uninterrupted service.

INVEST IN IDEAS

Inform your clients about new investment ideas that come with your new firm placement; this will help you to make fresh sales calls as well as give you the opportunity to secure the client’s transfer.

CONSOLIDATE

Inquire about your clients’ other brokerage accounts. If applicable, you will be able to explain the benefits of consolidation into your new firm.

ASK FOR REFERRALS

This may seem like the most obvious step, but it is surprisingly often overlooked. Always ask for referrals!
